Why using flax fibres?

  • Lightness

With a density of 1.45, flax fibres are lighter than carbon fibres and glass fibres.

Density of flax fibres

  • Mechanical Properties

Flax fibres have mechanical properties close to those of the glass fibres:

Specific Tensile Strength of flaxSpecific Young Module
  • Absorption of vibrations

Flax reduces composite vibrations. The thermal expansion of flax and its elongation at break (1.5%) are equivalent to the carbon. It allows combining easily flax and carbon. This last one will bring rigidity and flax, placed at the heart of the composite, will absorb the vibrations.

Flax/Carbon composits

  • Composites tooling

Considering that flax has a thermal expansion coefficient equivalent to the carbon, it can be used for tooling which is used for the production of carbon composites. Flax having a lower cost than carbon, it allows to reduce the cost of carbon pieces.

  • Aesthetics

For a long time, man has always liked and estimated flax at its just value, on one hand thanks to its very diversified practice and on the other hand thanks to its noble and simple aesthetics.

  • A natural fibre

Flax fibre is a natural fibre. The composite sector is looking for ecological resources which will allow replacing nowadays synthetic fibres and which are polluting forward.
